Riders take second at the Battle of Iowa
The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders took second at the inaugural "Battle of Iowa" this weekend. This battle for statewide supremacy featured all four USHL teams from the state of Iowa in a tournament at The Stable.
The coveted Musket went to the Sioux City Musketeers, who met Cedar Rapids in the championship game Sunday afternoon after the Riders advanced by defeating Waterloo on Saturday 4-2.
Led by first-year head coach Luke Strand, the Musketeers defeated the Des Moines Buccaneers 7-1 on Saturday. Ryan Rashid and Matt Paape each had a pair of goals for Sioux City while goaltender Willie Yanakeff allowed just one goal and making 15 saves to earn the victory.
In the consolation matchup, Brock Montpetit and J.T. Brown each had three points to pace the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 6-1 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers.
The USHL celebrates its 31st season of junior hockey in 2009-10. With 190 players from the 2008-09 campaign already committed to NCAA Division I schools and 17 NHL Entry Draft picks taken from the League's rosters this past season, the USHL is the nation's foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
The RoughRiders would like to thank all of their in-state rivals for coming out to The Stable this weekend for the event. The Battle of Iowa was a success because of the cooperation of all the USHL's Iowa teams, and it serves as a testament to the quality of the organizations involved in the Battle.
